| Denver is a city in the northeastern part of the state of Colorado and also the capital city. The population of Denver is around 610,000 with an MSA of two and a half million residents. In the United States the city ranks twenty-fourth largest in the country. The city was established in 1858 during the Gold Rush in the Rocky Mountains. The Climate is cool and dry. Winter low temperatures can be into the teens and summer highs in the 80s. Precipitation is sparse usually 15 inches or less a year. Median family income is around $48,000. Many large companies have a presence in the Denver area including AIMCO, United Airlines, Xcel Energy, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. The Rocky Mountain News is the area's newspaper. Denver Magazine is a local favorite. Local highways include Interstates I-25, I-70, I-76, and I-225. The Regional Transportation District (RTD) handles public transportation. Denver International Airport serves the area, and Amtrak also serves Denver. Buckley Air Force Base is the only Denver area military facility. Educational facilities include the University of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, Community College of Denver, and Johson and Wales University. Famous people with ties to the area include Judy Collins, John Denver, Bob Dylan, and several members of Earth, Wind, and Fire.
